Sea star factor

abbr. SSF (a term with multiple meanings). Sea star factor is a heterodimeric protein of 38 kDa isolated from coelomocytes of the echinoderm Asterias forbesi. The protein is a potent inhibitor of the primary immune response to T-cell dependent antigens and also suppresses concanavalin-A-induced mitogenesis (Prendergast and Liu, 1976). Liu et al (1983) have reported that macrophages obtained from rats having received intraperitoneal injection of Sea star factor exert a profound suppressive effect on proliferation of various kinds of tumor cells in vitro. Donnelly et al (1985) have reported that Sea star factor downregulates expression of Ia on murine macrophages and that this may be a major factor in the suppression of primary immune responses to ... ... ... ... ...
