This peptide, renamed Scy1 [Scygonadin 1], has been isolated from the seminal plasma of the mud crab, Scylla serrata (renamed Scylla paramamosain). It has antimicrobial activities. The full-length cDNA encodes a mature peptide of 102 amino acids the sequence of which is not related to other reported antimicrobial peptides. The scygonadin gene is expressed predominantly in the male reproductive tract and is restricted to the ejaculatory duct. This protein may protect the male crab reproductive tract from invading pathogenic microorganisms (Wang et al, 2006).
