[satellite microglial cells] This general term pertains to a particular type of microglial cells, first described by Del Rio-Hortega (1919), that is characterized by very close somatic contact with a neuron. Satellite microglia somata have an aspherical shape as compared with non-satellite microglia. Apparent morphological specializations of the contacts between microglial cells and the neuron have not been observed. Both satellite microglial and non-satellite microglia show spontaneous transient membrane depolarizations but these are not correlated with neuronal activity (Wogram et al, 2016).
For a subpopulation of these cells see also AXIS microglia.
