A cell line established from a primary human osteogenic sarcoma. These epithelial-like cells are adherent cells that grow in monolayers and are not tumorigenic in nude mice (Fogh et al, 1977). These cells are used widely as models for human osteoblasts. Rodan et al (1987) have reported that SaOS-2 cells inoculated into diffusion chambers implanted intraperitoneally into nude mice produce mineralized matrix and strongly express alkaline phosphatase. The cells show a sensitive adenylate cyclase response to parathyroid hormone. They also exhibit typical binding of 1-25-dihydroxyvitamin D3
