[small ubiquitin-related modifier-1] This protein of 101 amino acids is one of three highly homologous but functionally distinct mammalian proteins related to ubiquitin (Su and Li, 2002) (see also: SUMO2/3, SUMO3). Many different proteins have been shown to be subject to posttranslational attachment of SUMO proteins. This reversible post-translational protein modification is usually being referred to as SUMOylation (Hay, 2001). Unlike ubiquitination, which often marks proteins for degradation, SUMOylation alters the functional activities of proteins and may even function as an antagonist of ubiquitin in the degradation of selected proteins.
