[small ubiquitin-related modifier-2/3] This designation is used frequently and refers to the two proteins SUMO2 [small ubiquitin-related modifier-2] (identical with Sentrin-2) and SUMO3 [small ubiquitin-related modifier-3], which are 96 % identical. The two proteins are generally assumed to be functionally identical (Gareau and Lima, 2010; Geiss-Friedlander and Melchior, 2007; Johnson, 2004).
Evdokimov et al (2008) and Zhang et al (2008) have generated knock-out mice that completely lack SUMO1. Animals are viable and lack any overt phenotype, suggesting that SUMO2 and/or SUMO3 can compensate for SUMOylation of SUMO1 targets.
