[surfactant protein D] This glycoprotein is one of several components of pulmonary surfactant, a mixture of phospholipids and surfactant-associated proteins made by alveolar type 2 pneumocytes. SP-D is found in a number of other sites in the body and in various secretions, and, therefore, may play a wider protective role than envisaged initially. SP-D is necessary for normal lung function. The protein contributes significantly to surfactant homeostasis and to pulmonary immunity by virtue of its ability to bind to various motifs of microorganisms, particles and allergens (Sano and Kuroki, 2005; Hohlfeld et al, 2002-2003). The sequence derived from the cloned genes shows that the protein is a member of the collectin family (collagenous calcium-dependent lectins) and contains fibrillar collagen-like regions and globular
