[SMAD proteins, SMAD protein, SMADs]
[Sma and Mad related proteins] SMADs are evolutionarily conserved proteins identified as mediators of transcriptional activation (for overview see: Massagué J et al, 2005). SMAD proteins are involved in signaling processes elicited through cell surface receptors of various members of the large family of proteins related to TGF-beta, which includes activins, inhibins, bone morphogenetic proteins, and MIS [Müllerian inhibiting substance] (Heldin et al, 1997).
