[Scrapie responsive gene 1] SCRG1 has been identified by Dron et al (1998), Dandoy-Dron et al (1998) by virtue of its increased expression in brain neurons of mice infected with scrapie. SCRG1 is present in autophagic vacuoles in terminal-stage disease (Dron et al, 2005). Dron et al (2006) have reported that SCRG1 is associated with autophagy. The SCRG1 gene encodes a protein of 98 amino acids that possesses features of cytokines but has no significant homology with any other known protein (Dron et al, 1998). SCRG1 is expressed preferentially in central nervous system neurons (Dron et al, 2000).
Aomatsu et al (2014) have reported that SCRG1 is secreted by human mesenchymal stem cells
