[staphylococcal complement inhibitor] SCIN is encoded by the scn gene of a bacteriophage harboured by Staphylococcus aureus (van Wamel et al, 2006). Its early expression as a secreted protein is one of the factors driving instant immune evasion (Rooijakkers SHM et al, 2006). For related proteins see also: SCIN-B and SCIN-C.
SCIN is an inhibitor of C3 convertase, the key component of the complement system. It blocks the formation of C3b on the surface of the bacterium and the ability of human neutrophils to phagocytose the pathogen (Rooijakkers SHM et al, 2005).
