[Staphylococcal complement inhibitor C] SCIN-C, encoded by the scc gene, shares 46 % homology with SCIN [staphylococcal complement inhibitor] (Jongerius et al, 2007). SCIN-C is a secreted protein that effectively blocks calcium mobilization mediated by complement factor C5a. SCIN-C strongly blocks phagocytosis of the pathogen by neutrophils. SCIN-C also strongly prevents deposition of C3b/iC3b in normal human serum. SCIN-B inhibits complement by stabilization of C3 convertases, which is similar to the inhibitory mechanism of SCIN.
