[stem cell inhibition factor, stem cell inhibitor] This factor is functionally, antigenically, and probably structurally identical with the bone marrow-derived inhibitor of stem cell proliferation described by Lord et al (1976) in Manchester and referred to as the Manchester inhibitor. The factor has been purified by monitoring its activity in the CFU-A stem cell assay (see also: hematopoietic stem cells).
SCI is encoded by the human G0S-19-1 gene (see: GOS). It is identical with one of the MIP proteins (MIP-1-alpha) and LD78 and belongs to the family of chemotactic cytokines known as
