[synaptic cleft-1] SC1 is a secreted glycoprotein expressed in the extracellular matrix during neural development and in the adult rodent brain, where it is expressed by Bergmann glia (Mendis et al, 1994). McKinnon and Margolskee (1996) have shown that SC1 is expressed in astrocytes. The expression of SC1 is upregulated in astrocytes following reactive astrocytosis after trauma (Mendis et al, 1996; McKinnon and Margolskee, 1996).
McKinnon et al (2000) have reported that knock-out mice lacking expression of SC1 are born at the expected ratios, are fertile, and have no obvious histological abnormalities. Also, their long-term survival does not differ from littermate controls.
