abbr. s-MTPN. The counterpart from other species has been termed myotrophin. S-myotrophin (12 kDa) has been purified from porcine skeletal muscle (Hayashi et al, 1998). The purified protein has growth-promoting properties on skeletal muscle cells. The bioactivity of S-myotrophin resembles that of IGF-1 in that S-myotrophin is a potent mediator of skeletal muscle cell hypertrophy thorough the accumulations of muscle structural proteins myosin and actin (Hayashi et al, 2001). Shiraishi et al (2006) have reported that S-myotrophin is a muscle growth factor that promotes the hypertrophy of muscle of mice in vivo.
