[RVFV NSs protein; NSs protein] This protein is a non-structural protein encoded in the genome of Rift Valley fever virus. NSs is a virulence factor that blocks nnate immunie responses by downregulating the antiviral type 1 interferon (IFN-alpha, IFN-beta) responses (Billecocq et al, 2004; Bouloy et al, 2001). The protein also downregulates the expression of the double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR), which constitutes a substantial part of the antiviral activity of interferon against RVFV (Habjan et al, 2009; Ikegami et al, 2009), and inhibits eIF2-alpha phosphorylation Ikegami et al, 2009).
The protein also interferes with host transcription by promoting the proteasomal degradation of p62, a subunit of the general transcription factor
