Abbr. also RL (from the mouse mutant reeler (Falconer, 1951) (hence: reeler protein) (identified originally as the CR-50 antigen that is expressed in wild-type animals but not in mutant animals (Ogawa et al, 1995; D'Arcangelo et al, 1997). The corresponding gene is deleted in mutant reeler mice (D'Arcangelo et al, 1995, 1997). Reeler mutant mice are characterized by impaired motor coordination, tremors and ataxia. The underlying cause is a profound disruption of cerebellar and cerebral architecture due to the inability of neurons to reach their correct locations in the developing brain.
