(RPMI = Roswell Park Memorial Institute). An EBV-transformed hematopoietic cell line established from peripheral blood leukocytes of a normal 33 year old male patient. The cells secrete IgM light chains and express HLA 2,7 antigens. The cell line is used as a producer of TNF-beta.
The cells are used also in bioassays to detect IL1 which stimulates the proliferation of these cells. The assay appears to be specific for IL1 and is not influenced by the presence of high concentrations of murine or human TNF and human IL6. It has been reported that RPMI 1788
