[ribonuclease A family 7] A databank synonym for this protein is SAP-2 [Skin-derived antimicrobial protein 2].

This cationic lysine-rich protein has been isolated from skin-derived stratum corneum and is secreted by keratinocytes (Harder and Schroder, 2002). RNASE7 possesses potent ribonuclease activity and is active against a broad spectrum of pathogenic microorganisms, including strains of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (Harder and Schroder, 2002; Zhang et al, 2003). RNASE7 mRNA is found in various epithelial tissues including skin, respiratory tract, genitourinary tract, and at a low level, in the gut.
