[pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A] PAPP-A is synthesized in the placenta as a precursor preproprotein (1627 amino acids) (Haaning et al, 1996). For a related protease see: PAPP-A2.
RT-PCR analyses demonstrate that detectable levells of the protein are found in virtually all tissues (Overgaard et al, 1999). The protein is being referred to also as Pappalysin-1 (Boldt et al, 2001) (which in the systematic enzyme nomenclature is EC3.4.24.79). García and Castrillo (2005) have described the gene as DIPLA1 [Differentially expressed in placenta 1], which is expressed specifically in the placenta.
