[pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide] PACAP is a polypeptide hormone related to vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) (68 % homology) isolated originally from ovine hypothalamus (Miyata et al, 1989. The sequence is highly conserved and is identical in mammals, including mice, humans, rat, and sheep (Okazaki et al, 1995). Sequences show minor variations among vertebrates (Sherwood et al, 2000).
The approved gene symbol for this protein is ADCYAP1 [adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide 1]. PACAP exists in two C-terminally amidated molecular forms, PACAP(1-27) [PACAP27] (
