Omentin

The approved gene symbol is ITLN1 [Intelectin-1] (see: Intelectin).

Omentin, called also omentin-1, is a visceral fat depot-specific secretory protein identified by Yang et al (2006). Omentin mRNA is expressed predominantly in visceral adipose tissue and is barely detectable in subcutaneous fat depots in humans and rhesus monkeys. Omentin mRNA is expressed in stromal vascular cells, but not fat cells. Omentin does not affect basal but enhanced insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in human adipocytes. Its expression is downregulated by insulin and glucose (Tan et al, 2008).
