The monoclonal antibody of this name (Mason and Williams, 1980) recognizes the Thy1.1 determinant on Thy1 [thymus cell antigen 1] in rats and AKR mice but does not react with the Thy1.2 determinant (Balb/c or C3H mouse). Binding of this antibody to thymocytes is inhibited by pure rat brain Thy1 antigen.

In the nomenclature of CD antigens this cell surface antigen has been given the designation CD90.
