OX44 (also: MOX44, for MRC OX44) is a monoclonal antibody that labels all myeloid cells and peripheral lymphoid cells but only 12 % of thymocytes in the rat (Paterson et al, 1987). Thymic cells expressing the corresponding antigen include most if not all cells found in the medulla but only a small fraction of the cortical cells. Most CD4(-) CD8(-) cells express OX44, whereas almost all CD4(+) CD8(+) cells do not express the antigen. In functional tests, the cells expressing OX44 account for all proliferation by thymocytes when stimulated by allogeneic spleen
