[olfactomedin-like protein 1] This secreted glycoprotein has been identified by Wan et al (2008). Secretion is triggered by serum. OLFML1 is expressed mainly in the villi of the small intestine, liver, lung and heart. Ectopically administered OLFML1 promotes proliferation of HeLa cells and increases the percentage of cells in S phase of the cell cycle. Silencing of OLFML1 protein expression inhibits cell proliferation and delays the entry of cells into S phase.
Murakami K et al (2018) have reported expression of OLFML1 in osteoblasts, showing that OLFML1 is a negative regulator of osteoblast mineralization. Mutation of OLFML1 leads to impaired osteoblast
