This pregnancy induced cDNA encodes a protein of approximately 34.5 kDa. The cDNA has been isolated from a human ovarian cDNA library. The human and rat OKL38 gene gives rise to at least different transcripts (Ong et al, 2004). The C-terminal 317 residues of BDGI [BMSC-derived growth inhibitor] are identical with OKL38. The approved gene symbol is OSGIN1 [oxidative stress induced growth inhibitor 1].
OKL38 RNA is found in most tissues. Highest levels are observed in the ovary, kidney, and liver and levels rise with the onset and advancement of pregnancy (Huynh et al, 2001).
