[opioid-binding cell adhesion molecule] OBCAM is a protein isolated initially by its capacity to bind opiates (Cho et al, 1986). The cDNA for this opioid-binding protein with homologies to cell adhesion molecules has been cloned by Schofield et al (1989). The human gene has been cloned by Shak and Lee (1995). This protein is one of the members of the IgLON protein family and is being referred to also as IGLON1. The protein is being referred to also as OPCM [Opioid-binding cell adhesion molecule]. The approved gene symbol is OPCML [opioid binding protein/cell adhesion molecule-like]. OPCAM does not possess a membrane-spanning
