Nucleostemin

abbr. NS. The approved gene symbol is GNL3 [guanine nucleotide-binding protein-like 3]. The gene has been identified independently by virtue of estrogen-induced increased expression in breast cancer cell lines by Charpentier et al (2000), who referred to the protein as E2IG3 [E2-induced gene 3].

The gene encoding Nucleostemin has been isolated from rat CNS stem cells by Tsai and McKay (2002). The name refers to the observation that the protein shows preferential expression in the nucleoli of neural stem cells, embryonic stem cells, and several cancer cell lines.
