Ninjurin

[nerve injury-induced protein] abbr. NIN1; approved gene symbol NINJ1. The gene encoding this cell surface protein has been identified by differential screening of a rat cDNA library. Expression is upregulated after axotomy in neurons and in Schwann cells surrounding the distal nerve segment (Araki and Milbrandt, 1996) (see also: Neurotrophic factors). The protein consists of an N-terminal (1-71 aa) and a C-terminal (139-152 aa) ectodomain, two transmembrane domains (72-100 aa and 111-138 aa), and an intercellular region (101-110 aa) (Araki and Milbrandt, 1996).
