Neuropeptide S (SFRNGVGTGMKKTSFQRAKS) (named by Xu et al, 2004 who identified the human, rat, and mouse neuropeptide S precursor proteins) is a peptide of 20 amino acids generated as a C-terminal proteolytic fragment of a precursor polypeptide (Xu et al, 2004). Neuropeptide S shows overlapping expression patterns with its receptor (see below) in several tissue types, including the epithelium of human colon and bronchi (Xu et al, 2004; Vendelin et al, 2005).
