abbr. NmU. Neuromedin U-8 (octapeptide; abbr. NmU-8; YFLFRPRN) and Neuromedin U-25 (25 amino acids; abbr. NmU-25; FRVDEEFQSPFASQSRGYFLFRPRN) were identified originally as neuromedins from porcine spinal cord (Minamino et al, 1985) and termed neuromedin U (for uterus) because of their uterus stimulating activity (contraction of smooth muscle cells). These peptides are found in pituitary, spinal cord and gut of various species (Domin et al, 1987, 1989; Steel et al, 1988; Minamino et al, 1988; Kage et al, 1991; O'Harte et al, 1991), including humans (Austin et al, 1995).
