approved gene symbol: NRD1. Abbr. also: NRD convertase. The enzyme cleaves peptide substrates at the N-terminus of arginine residues in dibasic moieties independent of the nature of the basic doublet (hence the name and acronyms from N = N-terminus; R = 1-letter code for arginine; D for dibasic).
Nardilysin is a metalloendopeptidase (family of zinc-metalloproteases) first isolated from rat testes by Chesneau et al (1994) who referred to it as NRDc. The rat enzyme is a homolog of the mouse arginine-specific dibasic cleaving enzyme (dynorphin converting enzyme) isolated from the mouse thymoma cell line EL4
