[nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 3] NPP-3 (for nomenclature see: Zimmerman et al, 2000) is a type-2 transmembrane glycoprotein of Mr 130 kDa (110 kDa when nonglycosylated) identified first as an antigen on rat hepatocytes (see: B10). NPP-3 is expressed also in other epithelial cells, in which it also has an apical localization (Scoazec et al, 1990; Scott et al, 1997). Mislocation to the basolateral surface of hepatocytes or biliary cells has been observed under normal and pathophysiological conditions (Durand-Schneider et al, 1987; Meerson et al, 1998; Moreau et al, 1988; Scoazec et al, 1990).
Scott et al (1997) have shown that NPP-3 is an apical alkaline phosphodiesterase/nucleotide pyrophosphatase.
