This biochemically uncharacterized factor of approximately 10 kDa is found in the conditioned medium of Concanavalin A-activated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. It specifically induces and sustains proliferation of purified human NK-cells but not of T or B-cells.
Proliferation of NK-cells is induced by IL2 is enhanced significantly in the presence of proliferation inducing factor. NK-cells can be maintained in culture for at least a month in the presence of proliferation inducing factor alone, but the cells lose their cytolytic activity after 3 4 weeks in culture. Addition of IL2 to such cells
