[neuropeptide GE; neuropeptide glycine-glutamic acid] This neuropeptide with the sequence GSVAFPAENGVQNTESTQE, is encoded by the same gene that also encodes MCH [melanin-concentrating hormone] and another neuropeptide NEI [neuropeptide EI; neuropeptide glutamic acid-isoleucine] (Nahon et al, 1989; Presse et al, 1990; Parkes and Vale, 1992).
Hintermann et al (2001) have reported that NGE can induce cAMP formation and melanin synthesis, which can be blocked by agouti protein or inhibitors of adenylate cyclase or protein kinase A at physiologically still relevant concentrations, as e.g. found in autocrine
