[neonatal brain-derived carcinostatic factor] This biochemically uncharacterized factor or 62 kDa (pI = 9.1) is secreted by neonatal mouse brains but not by adult or fetal brain tissues and other organs. NBCF treated with neuraminidase loses part of its activity, suggesting glycan moieties required for the activity. NBCF secretion is inhibited also by tunicamycin at non-cytotoxic doses.
NBCF inhibits growth and DNA synthesis of malignant cells preferentially over those of normal cells. NBCF is more cytocidal for undifferentiated neuroblastoma cells than for other tumor cell types.
