[non-adrenergic non-cholinergic neurons] This term refers to populations of peripheral inhibitory neurons employing atypical neurotransmitters different from acetylcholine and noradrenaline. These neurons are found mainly in the enteric nervous system and play a role in the control of gastrointestinal motility. Atypical neurotransmitters include nitric oxide (Li and Rand, 1990; Christinck et al, 1991; Boeckxstaens et al, 1991; D'Amato et al, 1992; Barbier and Lefebvre, 1993; Mulè and Serio, 1993; Belai A and Burnstock, 1994; Ergün Y et al, 2001), ATP (Burnstock et al, 1970; Mulè and Serio, 1993; Belai and Burnstock, 1994; Lefebvre et al, 1995; Jenkinson and Reid, 2000), or peptides such as VIP [vasoactive intestinal peptide
