This term has been coined by Overmeyer et al (2008) to describe the morphology of cell death observed in glioblastoma cells after expression of activated ras oncogene. Methuosis appears to be a form of cell death initiated by dysregulation of macropinocytosis and alterations in the trafficking of clathrin-independent endosomes. It is characterized by the accumulation of large phase-lucent cytoplasmic fluid-filled vacuoles reminiscent of those observed during autophagy. Unlike autophagosomes, the Ras-induced vacuoles are not bounded by a double membrane and do not sequester organelles or cytoplasm. Also, they are not acidic and do not contain the autophagosomal membrane protein LC3-II
