[enkephalin, enkephalins]
Met-Enkephalin (Met5-Enkephalin; abbr. MENK) is a pentapeptide (Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Met; YGGFM) identified originally in the brain (Hughes et al, 1975). The primary structure of its precoursor has been reported by Comb et al (1982). The approved gene symbol for the gene encoding Met-Enkephalin is PENK [proenkephalin] (Comb et al, 1982). Enkephalins are released from the precursor by a processing protease and are not derived from Beta-Endorphin, a cleavage product of POMC (proopiomelanocortin).
The PENK gene also encodes one copy of Met-Enk-RGL [Met-Enkephalin-Arg-Gly-Leu
