[proenkephalin] This is the approved gene symbol for the gene encoding proenkephalin A, Enkephalin A, Preproenkephalin A. The precursor protein encodes Met-Enkephalin (4 copies), Leu-Enkephalin (1 copy), (one copy) enkelytin and other non-opioid peptides, which are released by proteolytic processing. The PENK gene also encodes one copy of Met-Enkephalin-Arg-Gly-Leu] (YGGFMRGL) abbr. MERGL, and one copy of Met-Enkephalin-Arg-Phe (Goumon et al, 1996; Kojima et al, 1982; Gubler et al, 1982; Comb et al, 1982).
