abbr. MCA (a term with multiple meanings). This biochemically uncharacterized factor of 35-40 kDa is found in conditioned medium of a Th2 T-helper cell clone (ST2/K.9) stimulated by concanavalin A. It is produced preferentially by Th2 helper cells.
MCA is a glycoprotein that enhances the proliferation of mucosal mast cells promoted by a combination of IL3 and IL4. MCA does not stimulate proliferation of mast cells in the absence of a combination of IL3 and IL4 or in the presence of either IL3 or IL4 alone.
