[membrane inhibitor of reactive lysis] This 18 kDa protein has been isolated from normal erythrocytes (Holguin et al, 1989). It protects paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria erythrocytes from CoFBb-initiated hemolysis initiated by activated cobra venom factor complexes in which activated factor B (Bb) is bound to the venom moiety, forming a stable C3/C5 convertase. By blocking the function of MIRL with a monospecific antibody, normal erythrocytes are made susceptible to reactive lysis, and immunoblotting experiments showed that paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria type 3 erythrocytes lack MIRL.
In the nomenclature of CD antigens, this antigen has been given the designation CD59.
