[macrophage inflammatory protein-1-beta] A factor produced by macrophages that causes local inflammatory responses in vivo, and induces superoxide production by neutrophils in vitro. Two peptides are responsible for this activity. They have been termed MIP-1-alpha, and MIP-1-beta (Sherry et al, 1988). See: MIP [MIP (macrophage inflammatory protein]. The factor is known also as SCYA4. The approved gene symbol is CCL4. Human MIP-1-beta has been identified independently as LAG-1 [lymphocyte activation gene-1].
