This murine protein (141 amino acids) is a member of the CXC-Chemokines but differs from other CXC-Chemokines by having an extended C-terminal domain of approximately 65 amino acids (Rossi et al, 1999). It is expressed highly in lung epithelial cells and its expression is upregulated in various lung inflammation models. Lungkine may be involved in lung-specific trafficking of neutrophils as it is secreted into the airway spaces and induces the migration of neutrophils in vitro and in vivo (Rossi et al, 1999).
Schmitz et al (2007) have reported expression of lungkine in murine gastrointestinal, urogenital, and endocrine organs and have shown expression in goblet cells and endometrial cells.
