This peptide with the sequence RNRRWCIDQQA (Arg-Asn-Arg-Arg-Trp-Cys-Ile-Asp-Gln-Gln-Ala) is derived from a gene in the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris. This gene encodes a protein with features of defensins. The peptide corresponds to the part of the protein with putative antimicrobial activity.
Kim et al (2014) have reported that the peptide increases cell proliferation in neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. Lumbricusin also significantly inhibits cell death by apoptosis and decreases viability induced by treatment with 6-hydroxy dopamine, a Parkinson's disease-mimicking agent.
