This protein has been identified by means of a monoclonal antibody (PC3.1) that marks discrete subpopulations of neurons in the lateral neocortex of rats (Arimatsu et al, 1994; Hatanaka et al, 1994) and serves as a marker of regional specification and/or morphogenesis of the forebrain, especially of its dorsal midline structures including the pineal gland (Takiguchi-Hayashi and Arimatsu, 1995; Arimatsu and Ishida, 1998). Takiguchi-Hayashi et al (1998) have reported that most of the dorsal root ganglion neurons containing either CGRP, substance P, or somatostatin coexpress latexin.
