Lactogenin (17 kDa) has been isolated from bovine milk (Ye et al, 1999). Lactogenin displays limited ribonuclease activity which is, however, higher than that of angiogenin-1 towards yeast tRNA. This RNAase also cleaves poly(C) (see also: RISBASES).
Lactogenin has been shown to inhibit cell-free translation in a lysate prepared from rabbit reticulocytes. Lactogenin is a strong inhibitor of HIV1 integrase, a moderate inhibitor of HIV1 reverse transcriptase and a weak inhibitor of HIV1 protease (Ng et al, 2001).
