A tetrapeptide, Leu-Ser-Ala-Leu, arising by proteolytic processing of NESP55 (neuroendocrine secretory protein of 55 kDa). See: Granins. The peptide is known also as 5-HT moduline [5-Hydroxytryptamine-moduline].
LSAL has been identified independenly as 5-HT moduline [5-Hydroxytryptamine-moduline], an endogenous peptide that specifically modulates the sensitivity of 5-HT1B/1D receptors controlling serotonergic activity (Massot et al, 1996; Rousselle et al, 1996, 1998). Bonnin et al (1999) have reported that acute stress induces a differential increase of 5-HT-moduline tissue content in various rat brain areas.
