[leucine-rich glioma inactivated 2] A databank synonym is LGIL2 [LGI1-like protein 2]. The gene has been identified independently as KIAA1916. The LGI2 gene has been identified by Gu et al (2002), based on sequence similarity to LGI1 [leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1]. Senechal et al (2005) have shown that LGI2 is expressed in most brain regions and is secreted upon transfection into 293T-cells. Wild-type LGI2 is secreted into the extracellular medium in glycosylated form similarly to LGI1, whereas proteins mutated at homologous positions of LGI2 and the established epilepsy gene LGI1
