[leukocyte adhesion inhibitor] This factor is produced by endothelial cells after cell activation by IL1, TNF, and bacterial endotoxins. It prevents the adhesion of neutrophils to the endothelium and thus protects it from damage caused by neutrophils. LAI therefore has anti-inflammatory activities (see also: inflammation).
LAI is identical with one of the molecular forms of IL8. It has an extension of 5 N-terminal amino acids. This 77 amino acid form of IL8 is quickly converted into the chemotactically more active 72 amino acid form of IL8 by enzymes such as thrombin
