kielin/chordin-like protein |
60S ribosomal protein L31 |
||
This secreted factor has been isolated by Matsui et al (2000) from Xenopus laevis tissues. Kielin is a secreted protein that contains multiple cysteine-rich repeats similar to those in Chordin (for a related protein in humans see also: kielin/chordin-like protein).
Kielin is a signaling molecule that mediates inductive activities of the embryonic midline. Injection of Kielin mRNA causes dorsalization of ventral marginal zone explants and expansion of MyoD expression in neurula embryos. The expression of Kielin in mesoderm is activated by Chordin but unlike Chordin the activities of Kielin may not involve direct interactions with BMP4.
